Why have my tattooed brows discoloured?

Updated: May 22, 2024

Designed to fade, yet your brow tattoo has discoloured? And a few years down the line it's still hanging around? This is a consistent and trending complaint that I have seen since joining the industry.

SPMU (semi-permanent brows) - otherwise known as permanent brows, micro-blading and tattoo brows, have come a long way since it was first introduced in the beauty industry, and is still continuously growing, changing and adapting.

A lady who has had her brow tattooed now has discoloured brows that have turned a blue/grey tone

Putting it simply, your brows may have discoloured due to exposure from the sun, pigment implantation that is too deep, incorrect pigment undertone, low quality ink and pigment types.

Discolouration is often times synonymous with a lack of fully fading brows. Did you know that the type of pigment used can effect this?

There are 3 types of pigment that can be used for micro-bladed/ tattooed brows: Organic, hybrid and inorganic.

A lot of artists use organic pigment because it is the most long lasting, and provides you value for money. However organic pigment does not fade well. This is often where you get a brow or grey faded brow that needs colour correction. After a while there can only be so many top ups before you'll need laser removal.

Georgia Ella Beauty uses inorganic pigment. Often times as this pigment fades the warmth of the colour will come out, but inorganic pigment is much more stable than the other alternatives, meaning they are much more resistant to discolouration. Inorganic pigment fades much more beautifully and does not last as long, almost permanently like you see with organic pigment.

My brows are already red, grey or blue...

In this case, there are two options you may wish to consider.

If you want to keep your brows.. and you're happy with the shape, and idea of long lasting brows. You can opt to have them touched up and corrected by your permanent makeup artist.

If your brow tattoo isn't perfect, or you're not 100% happy with them. You may wish to contact a laser consultant to have them removed.
